Halloween Pet Safety Tips for Dogs and Cats
We love the spooky season here at Belle Isle Animal Hospital, but we want to make sure Halloween is fun, not frightening, for your pets! 🎃🐾
Halloween brings candy, costumes, decorations, trick-or-treaters, and plenty of excitement. While all of that can be fun for people, some of the most common Halloween traditions can create unexpected hazards for dogs and cats.
If you’re looking for Halloween pet safety tips in Atlanta, here are some simple ways to help keep your furry family members happy, healthy, and safe this Halloween.
Keep Halloween Candy Away From Pets
Halloween candy may be a treat for people, but it can be dangerous for pets. Chocolate, particularly dark and baking chocolate, can be toxic to dogs and cats, while sugar-free products containing xylitol can be especially dangerous for dogs.
Candy wrappers can also cause problems if swallowed, potentially leading to an intestinal blockage.
Keep candy bowls, trick-or-treat bags, and other treats securely out of your pet’s reach. Don’t forget to remind children and Halloween guests that candy is for people, not pets!
If you think your pet has eaten chocolate, xylitol, or another potentially toxic substance, contact your veterinarian or a pet poison-control service right away.
Choose Pet Costumes Carefully
Who doesn’t love a great Halloween photo with their dog or cat? 🎃 But costumes aren’t right for every pet.
If your pet enjoys dressing up, make sure their costume:
- Allows them to move, see, breathe, eat, and drink normally
- Fits properly without restricting movement
- Doesn’t contain small, dangling, or easily chewed pieces
- Doesn’t interfere with their ability to walk or use the bathroom
Avoid forcing a costume on a pet who seems uncomfortable or stressed. A festive bandana can be a fun alternative!
And remember: never leave a pet unattended while wearing a costume.
Be Careful With Halloween Decorations
Halloween decorations can create hazards for curious pets.
Keep electrical cords, small decorations, costume accessories, and other chewable objects safely out of reach. Small pieces can become choking hazards or cause problems if swallowed.
Be particularly careful with candles and lit Jack-o’-Lanterns. A curious cat or playful dog can knock them over, potentially causing burns or a fire.
Battery-operated candles can be a safer way to create that spooky Halloween glow.
Give Your Pet a Quiet Place During Trick-or-Treating
For many dogs and cats, the biggest Halloween challenge isn’t the candy, it’s the constant doorbell, unfamiliar people, strange costumes, and increased activity.
Even normally social pets can become frightened or stressed by the unusual sights and sounds.
Consider setting up a comfortable quiet room for your pet, away from the front door and trick-or-treating activity. Give them their favorite bed, toys, and fresh water, and keep doors and windows securely closed.
If your pet normally spends time outdoors, bring them inside for Halloween night. Frightened pets can bolt when they encounter unfamiliar people, costumes, or noises.
Keep Your Pet Safely Identified
Halloween can increase the risk of pets escaping through an open door.
Before the festivities begin, make sure your pet is wearing a secure collar with current identification tags and that their microchip information is up to date.
If you’re walking your dog after dark, keep them securely leashed and consider using reflective gear to make them easier to see.
Don’t Forget About Glow Sticks
Glow sticks and glow jewelry can be particularly tempting to curious cats. Although these products are generally not considered highly toxic, chewing on them can cause an unpleasant taste and significant drooling or other irritation.
Keep glow sticks and other Halloween accessories away from pets whenever possible.
What Should I Do If My Pet Eats Halloween Candy?
If your dog or cat gets into Halloween candy, don’t wait for symptoms before seeking advice. Save the candy packaging if possible so your veterinarian can determine what ingredients your pet may have consumed and approximately how much.
Chocolate and xylitol-containing products can pose serious risks, and the appropriate response can depend on the type and amount ingested as well as your pet’s size and health.
When in doubt, contact your veterinarian or a pet poison-control service promptly. (ASPCA)
