Halloween Pet Safety FAQ

Halloween brings candy, costumes, and plenty of excitement, but it can also bring a few hazards for our furry family members. Here are answers to some of the most common questions we get this time of year.

What Halloween candy is toxic to dogs?

Chocolate is toxic to dogs, particularly dark and baking chocolate. Sugar-free products containing xylitol can also be extremely dangerous. Keep all candy securely away from pets.

Can cats eat Halloween candy?

Halloween candy isn’t appropriate for cats either. Chocolate can be toxic, and candy wrappers or other small pieces can create choking or gastrointestinal risks.

Are Halloween costumes safe for dogs and cats?

Costumes can be safe when a pet is comfortable wearing one and the costume allows normal movement, breathing, eating, and drinking. Avoid costumes with small or dangling pieces, and never leave a costumed pet unattended.

How can I keep my dog calm on Halloween?

Keep your dog in a comfortable, quiet area away from the front door and trick-or-treaters. Familiar toys, bedding, and other comforting items can help reduce stress during the busiest part of the evening.

What should I do if my pet eats chocolate?

Contact your veterinarian or a pet poison-control service promptly. Keep the packaging so you can provide information about the type and amount of chocolate consumed.
