Halloween Safety Tips for Your Pets: Keep Them Safe with Belle Isle Animal Hospital

We love the spooky season here at Belle Isle Animal Hospital, but we want to make sure it’s not spooky for your fur-babies! As a trusted vet in Atlanta, we’re sharing essential Halloween tips to keep your pets happy and healthy this year.

Treats to Avoid

Many candies commonly associated with Halloween are toxic to dogs and cats. Dark chocolate, white chocolate, and anything with the ingredient Xylitol (an artificial sweetener found in sugar-free treats) are dangerous to pets. Additionally, treats containing caffeine or nuts should be kept out of reach. Even candy wrappers can pose a serious risk if ingested. Be sure to remind your guests and children to keep all treats far from your pets’ paws and secure any tempting-smelling trash they might get into.

Costumes and Decorations

While Halloween costumes and decorations may look fun, they can pose hazards to your pets. Some costumes and decorations can be tempting to chew on but dangerous if swallowed. Loud or spooky decorations might scare pets, causing them to bolt from the house. And don’t forget—candles and Jack-o-Lanterns are potential fire hazards if knocked over by a curious cat or dog.

Managing Outdoor Noise

Halloween festivities often mean more noise, increased foot traffic, and new faces, which can overwhelm pets. To prevent your furry friend from getting spooked and potentially running away, we recommend keeping them in a quiet, calm room away from the action. For outdoor pets, it’s best to bring them inside for the night.
